History

In 1974, Van Allen Rice started with $900, a partner, some power tools, and an idea for a new business, and founded Bestek Lighting & Staging. Leveraging his background in lighting for schools and theater, Van began building sets and lighting for local dinner theaters on Long Island, NY. His reputation for quality work quickly spread.

Bestek’s first turning point came in 1976, when they were asked to build a set for singer Todd Rundgren, which then followed him across the world. Later, in New York, Bestek began building a name in the fashion industry and, in the 1980s, it became the leading provider for New York fashion shows. The next break came when Bestek became the primary lighting supplier for Studio 54, the most famous nightclub in Manhattan that was known for its incredible multimedia, theatrical displays and lighting.

Over the past 40 years, Bestek has expanded its portfolio to a wide range of events, including corporate meetings, commercial product launches, live entertainment, and nonprofit fundraising galas. Our project managers, designers, and craftsmen average more than 15 years with the company – a testament to the quality and pride that go into every job. Today, companies hire Bestek to provide one-stop service for all their event needs.
