Bestek Lighting and Staging was founded in 1974 by Van Allen Rice and his business partner. Armed with $900, some power tools, and some theatre experience, Van began building sets and designing lighting for local dinner theatres on Long Island. His reputation for providing quality work allowed him to build a solid foundation for the business that led to a major job, building the set for singer Todd Rundgren’s 1976 World Tour.

By the 1980’s Bestek began building a name for itself in the fashion industry, becoming the leading provider for New York fashion shows. During this time, Bestek was tapped as the lighting provider for Studio 54, the most famous nightclub in Manhattan-known for its incredible performances, theatrical shows and musical acts.

Since then, Bestek has expanded its portfolio to include a wide range of events in NY City and its surrounding area including corporate meetings, commercial product launches, live entertainment, weddings, and more. The Company now provides rigging, staging, audio, and design services in addition to its original scenic and lighting offerings.

In 2016 Bestek welcomed the beginning of a new chapter when Van Allen Rice retired. The Company welcomed Abott Finkel into the role of President and CEO, after merging Bestek with Abott Audio in 2015. With continued growth since its founding in 1974, Bestek continues to be New York’s premier supplier for event production. Our reputation for providing quality productions has led to partnerships with some of New York’s leading venues, including Grand Central Terminal’s Vanderbilt Hall, Ellis Island, One World Trade, and Brooklyn’s emerging venue Weylin B. Seymour’s.
